Agentforce
Salesforce's platform for building agents that work on CRM data for service, sales and marketing teams inside Salesforce.
An agent builder platform lets a team assemble an agent from parts it already understands: an instruction written in plain language, a set of connected apps, a knowledge source and a few rules about when to ask a person. The platform hosts the agent, keeps the credentials for each connected app and logs what the agent did. Nobody on the team has to pick a framework, write a tool-calling loop or run a server.
That convenience comes with a trade. The platform decides how the agent plans, how it retries a failed step and how much of its reasoning you can see. For many business tasks, such as triaging inbound requests, drafting replies from a policy library or updating records after a meeting, that is fine. For work where you need exact control over the order of steps, a code framework may fit better.
Most of the platforms here fall into two groups. Some live inside a larger suite you may already pay for, such as a CRM, an office suite or a cloud provider, and their main strength is access to the data already stored there. Others are independent and connect to many apps through their own integration libraries. The first group is easier to approve with IT; the second is often quicker to try across mixed tools.

Permissions deserve the most attention. An agent that can read a shared drive, send email and update a CRM can do a lot of good and a lot of damage. Look for per-tool permissions, read-only modes, spending or action limits, and approval steps that pause the agent before it sends, deletes or pays for anything. Ask whether the agent acts under its own service account or under the identity of the person who triggered it, since that changes what it can reach.
Then look at what happens after launch. Good platforms keep a run history showing each step, the tool inputs and outputs, and where a person stepped in. That record is how you find out why an agent sent the wrong reply, and it is what an auditor or security reviewer will ask for. Also check how the platform counts usage, because agents that loop or call many tools can use far more model calls than a simple chat.
A sensible first project is narrow and reversible: one agent, one team, a task where a person checks every output for the first few weeks. Widen its reach only once the run history shows it handles the common cases well.
Usually not for a first agent. These platforms are built for operations, sales and support staff to configure agents with instructions and connectors. Developers become useful when you need a custom connector, an internal API or tighter security settings.
A chatbot answers questions in a conversation. An agent can also take actions in connected systems, such as updating a record or sending a message, and can run on a trigger without anyone typing to it. That is why permissions matter more for agents.
Most platforms here let you add an approval step before chosen actions, so the agent drafts the email or record change and a person approves it. Check whether approvals can be set per tool and whether they show the exact action that will run.
Agent definitions rarely move cleanly between platforms. Keep your instructions, test cases and connector list in your own documents so you can rebuild the agent elsewhere, and ask the vendor how run history can be exported.
